At least 30 civilians were killed overnight on Thursday in Beni Territory, located within the North Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. UN News reported that local sources cited by the United Nations aid coordination office, OCHA, confirmed the death toll following an attack attributed by local authorities to the Allied Democratic Forces rebel group. [1]
During the assault, homes were set on fire and a local health centre was destroyed, resulting in the deaths of several patients inside the facility. UN News reported that news reports confirmed the destruction of the health centre during the overnight violence in Beni Territory. [1]
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is located in Central Africa and is the second-largest country on the continent by land area. With a population of roughly 124 million people, the nation has Kinshasa as its capital and primary economic centre. [5]
The attack has severely impacted medical operations in the region. UN News reported that the insecurity disrupted the ongoing Ebola response, forcing response teams to suspend operations. Individuals who were in contact with Ebola patients fled an observation centre, making it more difficult for health officials to track infections and contain the outbreak. [1]
