An Ebola disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has expanded to an eighth province, UN News reported. Health authorities in Nigeria confirmed the country's first case of the Bundibugyo strain in a woman who arrived in the capital city of Abuja from Uganda on October 3, according to Al Jazeera English and UN News. Investigators are currently tracing her movement from Uganda to assess the risk of further spread in Nigeria, UN News said. [1][2]

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that test results matched the strain currently affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Al Jazeera English reported. UN News and Al Jazeera English both report that this marks the first time the current outbreak has reached West Africa. Dr Patrick Otim of the World Health Organization emergency response programme stated that the source of exposure remains unknown as officials piece together the patient travel history. [1][2]

The Bundibugyo strain outbreak is the deadliest in the recorded history of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and has now affected four African nations, Al Jazeera English reported. As FTMQ World reported earlier, health authorities previously identified Ebola cases linked to a traveler from the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Kenya. Neighboring countries, including South Sudan, are strengthening health surveillance along their borders with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to the World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa. [2][5][10]

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a Central African nation with a population of about 124 million people, where Kinshasa serves as the capital and French is the official language. Ebola virus disease typically presents with an incubation period of two to 21 days after exposure, according to medical background, with early symptoms including sudden fever, severe headache, muscle pain, and fatigue.
