Palestinian farmers attempting to gather their crops during the annual olive harvest in the occupied West Bank are facing severe disruptions from Israeli settlers and military forces, according to UN News and Al Jazeera English. The United Nations aid coordination office recorded at least 160 settler attacks connected to the harvest during the first two weeks of October. UN News reported that these incidents included arson, the destruction of ancient olive trees, the use of live ammunition, physical assaults, and the theft of crops and farm equipment, frequently occurring alongside or under the protection of Israeli forces. [1][2]
Israeli security personnel briefy detained United States congressional candidate Brad Lander and other volunteers on Wednesday, according to Al-Monitor, Middle East Eye, and Al Jazeera English. Lander, a Democrat running for a House seat in New York City, was helping local Palestinians harvest olives when he was taken into custody alongside activists including a group of rabbis, before being released with a warning. While Lander was freed, Al Jazeera English reported that dozens of other volunteers remain in Israeli custody, and local farmers continue to be blocked from reaching their land. [2][3][5][7]
Violence and administrative measures have intensified across the territory, Middle East Eye reported. Israeli forces demolished an inhabited two-storey residential home near Bethlehem on Tuesday, citing the absence of a building permit, while preventing the residents from retrieving their personal belongings. Furthermore, Jerusalem church leaders condemned an assault on local harvesters and visiting European diplomats near Ramallah, describing it as part of an expanding pattern of settler violence. [4]
The latest incidents follow an attack near the village of Taybeh, where masked Israeli settlers targeted European diplomats and religious representatives visiting Palestinian harvesters, as FTMQ World reported earlier. During that assault, a French mayor was beaten and a diplomatic vehicle belonging to Belgium was damaged. The United States ambassador to Israel also recently called for the prosecution of those responsible for attacking American photojournalist Heidi Levine while she was covering the harvest. [11][12]
The West Bank is a landlocked territory bordered by Israel, Jordan, and the Dead Sea, which has been under Israeli occupation since 1967. The ongoing disruptions to the olive harvest directly threaten the livelihood and economic stability of thousands of local Palestinian families who depend on the seasonal yield. [1][2][8][10]
