United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk stated on October 19, 2026, that global hunger is an avoidable tragedy. Türk addressed the UN hosted Committee on World Food Security in Rome, UN News reported. He highlighted that more than one quarter of humanity currently struggles to obtain sufficient food, despite the reality that global production is adequate to feed the entire population. [1]

Türk attributed the persistence of widespread hunger to political injustice and the denial of human rights rather than physical scarcity, according to UN News. He noted that although the right to food is enshrined in international treaties and domestic laws, systemic barriers continue to prevent equal access for vulnerable populations. [1]

Data shows that undernourishment affected roughly 673 million people worldwide in 2024, which represents 8.2 percent of the global population. This figure marked a slight decrease from 733 million people in 2023, though overall hunger levels remain higher than before the pandemic. Global food production is sufficient to meet total caloric needs, but access is restricted by armed conflicts, political instability, and economic distortions that disproportionately harm regions such as sub Saharan Africa.
