Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has postponed legislative elections that were scheduled to take place next month, setting a new date of September 11, 2027. TVC News, Euronews, France 24, and the South China Morning Post all reported on Saturday that Abbas issued an official decree delaying the vote. France 24 and the South China Morning Post noted that a presidential election has also been scheduled for the same date in September 2027. [1][2][4][5]

Official media outlets reported the decision, confirming earlier speculation about a postponement, according to Al-Monitor. The Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that the presidency cited security, logistical, and on-the-ground obstacles to establishing the necessary conditions for a vote. France 24 and the South China Morning Post noted that Abbas specifically blamed Israel and the security situation across the Palestinian territories for the delay. [2][3][4][5]

The legislative elections had originally been scheduled for November 28, with a presidential election planned for early 2027, according to Al-Monitor. Al Jazeera English noted that the delayed vote was originally set for November 2026. Al-Monitor added that the international community had strongly advocated for the polls, which would have been the first legislative elections held in the Palestinian territories since 2006. [3][6]

Before the official announcement was made, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar accused Abbas of fooling the international community by cancelling promised elections once again, Euronews reported. [2]
