Nigeria confirmed its first Ebola case of Africa's latest outbreak on October 20, 2026, after a female patient travelled from Uganda to the capital city of Abuja. France 24, BBC Africa, Al Jazeera, Deutsche Welle, and The Rio Times all reported that the woman tested positive for the virus following her arrival. Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate stated that laboratory tests confirmed the diagnosis, as reported by BBC Africa and Deutsche Welle. [1][2][3][5][6]

According to Al Jazeera, the woman began exhibiting symptoms on October 7 and was admitted to a private hospital in Abuja on October 11. BBC Africa, The Rio Times, and AllAfrica News reported that the patient is currently in isolation receiving medical care, while health officials have identified 44 close contacts and initiated contact-tracing efforts to limit further transmission. [2][3][6][7]

France 24 reported that Kenya declared its ninth Ebola case alongside Nigeria's announcement, while Africa CDC chief Jean Kaseya described the situation as an extremely serious threat and requested international funding and medical supplies. In an earlier report, FTMQ World noted that cases in Kenya originated from a traveller who arrived from the Democratic Republic of Congo. [1][16]

The 2026 Ebola epidemic began in May 2026 in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and quickly spread into a significant regional health crisis [13]. Beyond direct health impacts, the Norwegian Refugee Council noted that conflict combined with disease outbreaks like Ebola has restricted educational opportunities for children in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan [4].
