The United States government has raised its travel advisory for Kenya to Level 3, advising citizens to reconsider travel following an Ebola outbreak in the country. BBC News, The EastAfrican, and AllAfrica News all reported that the warning follows growing health concerns. BBC News reported that nine cases have been confirmed, while The EastAfrican and AllAfrica News stated that eight cases have been recorded. [1][2][3]
BBC News reported that the confirmed cases include four relatives of the first victim, three healthcare workers, and a hospital cleaner, meaning all cases are linked to the original patient. AllAfrica News reported that the US Department of State issued the updated travel advisory amid concerns over regional virus transmission. BBC News added that nearly 5,000 healthcare workers have been trained to manage the virus. [1][3]
As FTMQ World reported earlier, Kenya confirmed its first Ebola death after a male citizen infected with the Bundibugyo strain returned to Nairobi from the Democratic Republic of Congo after travelling through Uganda. FTMQ World also reported earlier that a third case involved a 65-year-old woman placed in quarantine, and that the World Health Organization is supporting local containment efforts. [4][5]
BBC News reported that this is the first Ebola outbreak Kenya has ever experienced. While neighbouring countries such as Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo are accustomed to managing the disease, concerns are rising in Kenya that the virus could spread further despite government assurances.
