Afghanistan is at a difficult crossroad more than five years after the Taliban returned to power, UN News reported on 6 November 2026. Bruno Lemarquis, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in the country, stated that relative security is being undercut by acute humanitarian need. He noted that women and girls continue to suffer from severe and sweeping restrictions that deprive them of spaces to learn, work, and participate in public life. [1]

The country is experiencing a severe hunger crisis, with over 10 million Afghans requiring food assistance and 3.5 million children suffering from malnutrition. Economic collapse, climate volatility, mass displacement, and a sharp decline in international aid have contributed to the crisis. Humanitarian groups warn that vulnerable families face serious risk as food assistance programs diminish. [2]

Afghanistan remains economically underdeveloped and relies heavily on agriculture, opium poppy cultivation, and mineral resources. Decades of conflict have exacerbated chronic poverty and reliance on foreign aid. The country features diverse ethnic groups, including Pashtuns, Tajiks, Hazaras, and Uzbeks, across terrain dominated by the Hindu Kush mountain range. [3]

The restrictions on rights follow international legal actions against the country's rulers. As FTMQ World reported earlier, the International Criminal Court unsealed arrest warrants in October 2026 for four senior Taliban leaders, including Supreme Leader Haibatullah Akhundzada, on charges of crimes against humanity for gender persecution.
