Human rights lawyer Arnon Nampa has been sentenced to 34 years in prison after calling for reforms to the monarchy in Thailand, the BBC reported. The 42-year-old activist was prosecuted under the country's lèse majesté law, which criminalizes criticism of the royal family. He previously addressed a protest in August 2020 while dressed as the fictional character Harry Potter. [1][2]

According to the BBC, Thailand has prosecuted 294 people under its lèse majesté legislation since 2020. Courts in the country have handed down sentences reaching up to 50 years in prison for violations of the law. Arnon Nampa is currently facing multiple criminal prosecutions and has spent much of the past five years appearing in court. [1][2]

The legal actions against activists stem from public demonstrations that began in early 2020. Protests initially started against the government of then Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha after the dissolution of the opposition Future Forward Party. Demonstrators later expanded their demands to include unprecedented calls for reform of the Thai monarchy. [4]

Thailand is governed as a parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy with King Maha Vajiralongkorn serving as head of state. Executive power resides with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who took office in September 2025. The monarchy holds significant ceremonial authority protected by legal safeguards against public criticism. [5]
