Former gang leader Duane Keffe D Davis was sentenced on Tuesday to 40 years to life in prison for orchestrating the 1996 drive-by shooting death of hip-hop star Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas. Al Jazeera, the BBC, France 24, and the South China Morning Post all reported the sentencing, which concludes a cold case lasting 30 years. Davis, 63, was found guilty of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon. [1][2][3][4][5]

Al Jazeera and France 24 reported that Davis is the former leader of the South Side Compton Crips in Los Angeles and the sole person charged in connection with the murder. France 24 noted that Davis had previously boasted about his involvement in the killing in books and interviews, but later denied the claims during his trial. [1][4][5]

During the court proceedings on Tuesday, family members of the late musician addressed the court. According to the BBC, Shakur's sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, told the court that the loss of her brother had crippled her family for a long time and asked the judge for the maximum sentence. His brother, Maurice Shakur, also asked Judge Carli Kierny to impose the longest sentence possible. [2]

Shakur was an influential American rapper and actor whose worldwide record sales exceeded 75 million units. His music addressed social issues, political topics, and the marginalization of African Americans, alongside gangsta rap themes. [11][13]
