United States Archbishop Timothy Broglio has urged Catholic military personnel not to participate in a planned execution by firing squad, Al Jazeera reported. The statement released on Monday addresses the military plan to execute Nidal Hasan, a former army major who killed 13 people at Fort Hood, Texas, in 2009. [1]

The Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, provides Catholic religious services to individuals serving in the United States Armed Forces and their dependents. According to Al Jazeera, Archbishop Broglio stated that participating in the execution is contrary to the teachings of the church. [1][2]

Al Jazeera reported that the military plans to livestream the public execution of Hasan. Archbishop Broglio raised multiple concerns about the livestreaming plan in his statement, telling Catholic service members assigned to the firing squad that they must refrain from taking part. [1]
