British Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated on Sunday that Russia interfered in the 2016 Brexit vote, France 24 English, the South China Morning Post, and Guardian Europe reported. Burnham warned voters in France and Germany about Moscow-backed efforts to influence upcoming European elections. France 24 English noted that Burnham is the first British prime minister to publicly state that evidence exists of Russian interference in the referendum held a decade ago. [1][2][5][8][10]

According to the South China Morning Post and Guardian Europe, Burnham said he inquired about Kremlin involvement in the 2016 vote after taking office. Burnham said he asked whether Moscow interfered in the decision to leave the European Union and received a clear affirmative answer. Guardian Europe reported that the prime minister did not specify who provided this information upon his entry into Downing Street. [1][2][5]

Burnham became leader of the British government in July, France 24 English reported. The outlet noted that Burnham suggested last month that Britain could evaluate rejoining the European Union in the future. GB News reported that British lawmakers are scheduled to debate rejoining the European Union within days following his recent comments. [1][6]
