European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde will step down from her post on 7 February 2027, around nine months before her eight-year term ends. Euronews, the Financial Times, and France 24 reported that the announcement was made on Thursday. The central bank kept its interest rates on hold at 2.5% hours after the announcement, according to Euronews and the Financial Times. [1][2][3][4][5][7]

Lagarde told reporters in Frankfurt that she is leaving early because she can no longer remain neutral, describing neutrality as the price of central bank independence, Euronews reported. France 24 and Euronews noted that her decision is intended to give her freedom to engage on matters outside monetary policy, fueling speculation about a potential role in upcoming French elections. [1][2]

The announcement comes during a difficult period for the eurozone economy. Euronews reported that eurozone inflation stands at 3.8%, which is near double the central bank target, alongside ongoing turmoil in the French bond market. Euronews also reported that Lagarde indicated the central bank debated a rate hike and hinted at a possible move in December. [2][3][5]

Lagarde has served as president of the European Central Bank since 2019. Before her current role, she was the managing director of the International Monetary Fund from 2011 to 2019, and served as the French Minister of the Economy, Finance and Industry from 2007 until 2011. [13]

Her planned departure kicks off a search for her successor at the central bank. According to Euronews and the Financial Times, the next leader will have to navigate regional economic stagnation, market volatility, and political challenges across Europe. [3][4][6]
