A deadly train collision near Urda in central Spain on Wednesday morning killed 69 people and injured more than 100 others, the BBC reported. A high-speed Renfe train collided on the same track with a stationary Iryo train. The impact caused multiple carriages to derail, and there are fears the death toll could increase further as families look for missing relatives in regional hospitals. [1]
Public identification of the victims has begun, triggering widespread grief and anger across the country, according to the BBC. The victims include Julieta Gallego, a 24-year-old long-jump athlete who regularly competed on the Spanish athletics circuit, as well as a former government minister. The bodies of the deceased have been transported to the main forensics institute in Toledo for identification. [1]
As FTMQ World reported earlier, Spanish authorities have launched an official investigation into the cause of the disaster. The collision represents the second fatal rail incident in Spain this year and constitutes the deadliest train crash in Europe since 2013. [6]
