Ethiopia and Eritrea are edging closer to direct conflict following recent military clashes near their shared border. The International Crisis Group reported that the two nations risk causing further disruption in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea basin. The New Humanitarian reported that Eritrean forces crossed the border into Ethiopia's northern Tigray region, which led Ethiopia to launch two days of drone strikes targeting Eritrean troops and equipment. [1][2]
Eritrea denied the reports of its military incursion into Ethiopia. The New Humanitarian reported that Eritrean officials described the condemnation from Addis Ababa as a declaration of war. Eritrean authorities also claimed Ethiopia was using the accusations as a pretext to gain control of the Red Sea port of Assab. [2]
Diplomatic efforts to prevent a wider conflict are increasing as both governments accuse each other of aggression. Zegabi reported that the United Nations Security Council is scheduled to convene behind closed doors to address the rising tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea following a request from the United States. [4]
Ethiopia is a landlocked nation located in the Horn of Africa with a population of approximately 138 million people as of 2026. The country borders Eritrea to the north, along with Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya, South Sudan, and Sudan. Eritrea previously gained its independence from Ethiopian rule following an armed conflict that lasted from 1961 until 1991. [5][6]
