Large-scale fighting has broken out across northern Ethiopia after armed opposition groups launched a coordinated offensive against federal government forces. According to the International Crisis Group, long-simmering tensions escalated into a multi-pronged assault in the Tigray, Amhara, and Afar regions. [1]
The coalition of rebel groups, known as the Ethiopian Peoples Forces Coalition for Survival, initiated the large-scale military campaign on 23 September 2026. The Tigray Peoples Liberation Front characterized the offensive as a defensive action against the Ethiopian federal government. [2]
This sudden escalation represents the largest outbreak of violence in the region since the conclusion of the Tigray war, which lasted from 2020 to 2022 and resulted in an estimated 600,000 deaths. [2]
The International Crisis Group emphasized that despite the sudden surge in hostilities across multiple fronts, international intervention and diplomatic efforts can still prevent the conflict from devolving into another prolonged and costly war. [1]
