North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has showcased a new intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the United States, according to reports by StreamlineFeed, Reuters, Khaama Press, Internazionale, RBC-Ukraine, and ThePrint. The strategic display coincided with United States President Donald Trump signaling a potential diplomatic meeting during his upcoming tour of Asia. [1][4][5][6][7][8]

StreamlineFeed reported that Kim displayed the missile during a visit to a newly opened defense museum in Pyongyang, which serves as an archive of military advancements and nuclear capabilities. The South China Morning Post reported that the National Defence Revolution Museum opened on Sunday as the country's first facility dedicated exclusively to military hardware ranging from rifles to intercontinental ballistic missiles. [1][2]

The Hwasong-19 is a North Korean solid-fueled intercontinental ballistic missile that was first tested on 31 October 2024. It represents an evolution of the Hwasong-18 with a longer range and a heavier payload, and North Korean state media has claimed it is the strongest missile in the world. [9]

In separate regional developments, Deutsche Welle reported that diplomatic relations between South Korea and Ukraine have deteriorated over the transfer of two captured North Korean prisoners of war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed the transfer at the United Nations General Assembly on 23 September, prompting South Korea to recall its ambassador from Kyiv to Seoul because it wished to keep the move secret to avoid antagonizing Pyongyang.
