The United Nations released its annual report on Women, Peace and Security on Monday, which revealed that war is becoming deadlier for women and girls. UN News and Mirage News both report that women and girls accounted for one in four of the more than 37,000 civilians killed in armed conflict last year. That proportion represents double their share of civilian deaths in 2021. [1][2]
At least 25 women and girls are killed every day in conflict settings, UN News reported. The report noted that as total civilian deaths mount, instances of sexual violence are surging, while women remain largely excluded from formal peace processes. [1]
The findings follow broader international concerns over the targeted treatment of women in conflict regions. As FTMQ World reported earlier, the International Criminal Court unsealed arrest warrants earlier this month for four senior Taliban leaders, including Supreme Leader Haibatullah Akhundzada, on charges of crimes against humanity for gender persecution in Afghanistan.
