Russian President Vladimir Putin will host separate meetings in Moscow on Tuesday with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Business Upturn, Middle East Eye, The Jerusalem Post, Business Recorder, and Breakingthenews.net all reported the Kremlin announcement. Business Upturn reported that the talks take place as Moscow positions itself as a possible mediator in confrontation between Iran and the United States. [1][2][3][4][5]
The bilateral meetings coincide with a gathering of major gas exporters in the Russian capital. Business Upturn and Middle East Eye reported that Pezeshkian is travelling to Moscow to attend Tuesday's summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum. Middle East Eye cited Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency, which reported that Pezeshkian was scheduled to depart for Moscow on Monday night. [1][2]
The Gas Exporting Countries Forum is an intergovernmental body whose membership includes Iran, Russia, Qatar, and Algeria. Business Upturn reported that Iranian officials stated the meeting between Putin and Pezeshkian will focus on bilateral cooperation between the two nations. [1]
Pezeshkian is an Iranian politician and heart surgeon who assumed the presidency of Iran in 2024. As FTMQ World reported earlier, Putin previously met Pezeshkian in Turkmenistan, where the Russian leader pledged that Moscow would do everything possible to assist in ending conflict involving Iran.
