Rescue teams in Nairobi are searching through rubble to reach trapped survivors after a multi storey building collapsed in Kenya. France 24 reported that the structure was being built and was more than 10 storeys tall, while Al Arabiya English reported that it was an 18 storey building. FTL Somalia and DNE Africa both report that the collapse occurred in the Eastleigh neighbourhood of the city. [1][4][5][6]
Dust filled the surrounding streets after the structure went down, according to Al Arabiya English. FTL Somalia reported that the incident struck the heart of the Somali business hub located in Eastleigh. France 24 reported that emergency personnel launched a scramble to get through the debris to locate any survivors trapped inside. [1][4][5]
In separate health developments reported alongside the disaster, Kenya has recorded a second death from Ebola, according to France 24. Health authorities in the country had logged nine cases earlier in the week, all traced back to a first Ebola patient who died earlier in the month. [1]
Nairobi originated as a railway construction camp in 1899, established by British colonial authorities in the East Africa Protectorate to serve as a supply depot for the Uganda Railway project linking Mombasa to Kisumu. Rescue operations and assessments of the collapse site are ongoing. [1][10]
