French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the nation on Sunday following a weekend of widespread unrest, promising that full transparency will be ensured. Demonstrators gathered in major cities on Saturday to protest against inflation and the cost of living. Politico Europe and the BBC both report that the protests were mostly peaceful, but several events escalated into rioting, looting, and clashes with police. [1][2][4]
The BBC reported that around 550,000 demonstrators took to the streets, while Euronews placed the turnout at half a million. Demonstrators included students, trade union members, and members of the public protesting fuel prices and inflation. According to Al Jazeera and Euronews, the widespread anger also stems from deteriorating public school conditions. [1][2][3][4]
The unrest resulted in severe property destruction. Euronews reported that rioters set multiple blazes, stripped dozens of shops bare, and clashed violently with police, leaving one demonstrator with a blown-off hand. According to the Guardian, one of the most violent days of unrest in years left public buildings burned, hundreds of shops damaged, and led to 2,400 arrests across the country. [4][6]
In his national address from the Élysée Palace, President Macron denounced unbridled violence and warned demonstrators not to escalate the situation, as reported by the BBC and the Guardian. Macron stated that those who destroyed public property must pay and looters must reimburse the damage. Anadolu Ajansı reported that Macron announced prefects can ban demonstrations to maintain public order. [1][2][6][11]
Al Jazeera reported that President Macron promised to increase security measures across France, but stopped short of declaring a state of emergency or declaring a curfew. As FTMQ World reported earlier, the civil unrest has heightened political tensions across the country ahead of next year's presidential election. [5][15]
