A localized ceasefire in Ukraine's southern Kherson region ended on Sunday after Russia refused an offer to extend the agreement, South China Morning Post and France 24 reported. The truce, which BBC News World and France 24 described as a temporary pause in fighting to allow a humanitarian evacuation mission to the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky, was due to expire at 22:59 Ukrainian time. South China Morning Post noted that the truce was brokered by US first lady Melania Trump. [1][2][5]

Overnight Russian attacks targeted Ukrainian energy infrastructure across four regions, including Dnipro, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, and Khmelnytskyi, Politico Europe reported. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the strikes damaged substations, transformers, and power lines, cutting off electricity to thousands of households. BBC News World separately reported that Ukraine's air alert application appeared to suffer hostile interference on Sunday evening, issuing a false warning regarding radiation over Kyiv. [1][4]

In response to ongoing hostilies, Ukrainian long-range drones struck Russian oil infrastructure, according to the Guardian. Russian state media reported that drone strikes set fire to the Kstovo oil refinery in the Nizhny Novgorod region, while Moscow reported significant damage to an industrial facility in the same area, Politico Europe added. The Guardian noted that the attacks occurred shortly before upcoming US midterm elections. [3][4]

Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022, initiating a conflict that has caused hundreds of thousands of casualties and displaced millions of civilians, with Russian forces occupying roughly 20 percent of Ukrainian territory. Kyiv, the capital city of approximately 2,950,000 residents, has been repeatedly targeted by air strikes throughout the war. [11][12]
