Israelis marked three years since the Hamas-led October 7 attack on Wednesday with silent tributes, memorial ceremonies, and new military strikes on Gaza. Euronews, Al-Monitor, and the South China Morning Post reported that family members gathered for tributes across southern Israel. A national moment of silence was held at 6:29am, marking the exact minute the 2023 attack began, according to Euronews. [2][4][5]

Euronews reported that a UN inquiry confirmed 1,200 people were killed and 252 taken hostage during the initial assault. Mourners gathered at road junctions, bomb shelters, and the site of the Nova music festival. Al-Monitor and the South China Morning Post reported that family members bowed their heads at the festival site where militants opened fire at dawn in 2023. [2][4][5]

The commemorations come amid ongoing military conflict and political debate ahead of upcoming elections. Al Jazeera reported that Israel's military actions in Gaza have killed more than 74,000 Palestinians over the past three years. Meanwhile, France 24 noted that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains in power despite early predictions of his political downfall following the initial security failures. [1][3][4][5]

Separately, Middle East Eye reported that Israeli authorities demolished properties belonging to Yousef Zyadna, a Palestinian citizen of Israel. Zyadna had previously received praise for rescuing 30 Israelis from the Nova music festival during the October 7 attacks. [6][7]
