Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen led commemorations on October 23, 2026, to mark 70 years since Hungary's 1956 uprising against Soviet control. Euronews reported that Magyar attended a formal flag-raising ceremony at Lajos Kossuth Square in Budapest before laying floral tributes at memorial sites across the capital. [1][8]

According to Euronews, Magyar placed flowers at the grave of Imre Nagy, the former prime minister executed after the uprising failed. Euronews added that von der Leyen addressed Hungarian lawmakers, emphasising the global importance of freedom and democratic values during the memorial events. [1]

The 1956 revolution began on October 23 and lasted for 15 days before Soviet military forces deployed tanks to crush the rebellion. Euronews reported that the armed intervention resulted in the deaths of up to 3,000 Hungarian revolutionaries. [1]

Péter Magyar has served as the prime minister of Hungary since May 2026 and leads the Tisza Party. The anniversary comes as international observers continue to evaluate the historical impact of the 1956 revolution on modern European governance and security relations. [1][2][8]
