Prosecutors in Paraguay have charged former president Santiago Peña over his alleged role in a banking scandal, BBC News reported. Lawmakers, including members of his own party, voted unanimously to remove him from office following the collapse of Ueno Bank. Peña was arrested on Friday minutes after his removal. [1]
Peña has been accused of breach of trust and administration for personal gain, according to BBC News. He denies any wrongdoing. Although Peña offered to step down, lawmakers chose to impeach him instead of accepting his resignation. [1]
The banking failure left more than half of the population of Paraguay unable to access their money, BBC News reported. As FTMQ World reported earlier, the central bank of Paraguay initiated resolution procedures against Ueno Bank on November 3, and repayments to savers began on November 5 at 1,700 United States dollars per person. BBC News reported that Ueno Bank has links to Peña's private business interests. As FTMQ World reported earlier, Peña was placed under house arrest following his impeachment by the Senate. [1][4]
