Defence ministers from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Britain agreed on Monday to take on greater responsibility for European security. France 24 and Türkiye Today both reported that the officials reaffirmed that the United States remains an indispensable ally following talks held in Paris. [1][4]
The meeting gathered the E5 group, which consists of Europe's five main NATO members. According to France 24, the ministers declared after the talks that Europe must assume greater responsibility for its own security while maintaining close co-operation with Washington. [1][7]
The European Group of Five consists of the defence ministers representing the continent's five largest defence spenders and military powers. NATO's primary objective during the Cold War was maintaining deterrence through integrated military command structures, and its post-Cold War adaptations included eastward enlargement waves starting in 1999. [7][10]
The pledge comes alongside wider European security adjustments. As FTMQ World reported earlier, Sweden plans to deploy Patriot air defence systems and approximately 100 troops to Poland starting on 1 December to protect the Rzeszów-Jasionka logistics hub. [11]
