Sweden to send Patriot air defence systems and troops to Poland

Sweden will deploy Patriot surface-to-air missile systems and around 100 troops to Poland on 1 December to bolster security on NATO's eastern flank. Euronews reported that Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced the deployment to protect the Rzeszów-Jasionka logistics hub. The facility is a crucial node used to route international assistance to neighbouring Ukraine. [1]

The planned mission is scheduled to last seven months. According to Euronews, Sweden is taking over air defence duties at the hub from the Netherlands. The Swedish contingent will guard the facility against airborne threats, including drones and rockets. [1]

Colonel Sofia Westermark, commander of the Swedish air defence regiment, described the operation as the most complex mission Sweden has undertaken as a NATO member, Euronews reported. She noted that the location remains highly exposed to aerial threats. [1]

The MIM-104 Patriot is a mobile surface-to-air interceptor system developed by the United States defense contractor Raytheon. It serves as a primary air defence mechanism for the United States military and several allied nations. [7]
