A drone strike in the contested region of Abyei has reportedly killed 153 people, France 24 reported on October 21. The attack comes as the United Nations warns that the ongoing civil war in Sudan is taking a devastating regional toll. Following the incident, international leaders held an emergency meeting to address the escalating regional crisis. [1]

The conflict in Sudan began in April 2023 between two main military factions. The fighting pits the internationally recognized government led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan of the Sudanese Armed Forces against the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group, commanded by General Hemedti. Smaller armed groups and militias have also joined the fighting across the country. [2]

The humanitarian situation across the region continues to deteriorate alongside the violence. As FTMQ World reported earlier, the World Health Organization warned that healthcare and basic supplies in Darfur were critically low, with over 700,000 displaced people facing severe shortages in Tawila. The United Nations Security Council previously extended sanctions on Sudan until December 11. [4]

In response to the rising violence, health authorities are preparing to coordinate emergency relief efforts. Meanwhile, the United Nations envoy for Sudan spoke on the growing crisis following the international emergency session, as officials work to contain further regional instability. [1]
