Tesla chief executive Elon Musk announced on social media platform X on Friday that the company will wind down production of its Cybertruck electric pickup at its factory in Texas. Outlets report different timelines for the move, with BBC News World and Al Jazeera English reporting the wind-down will happen around the middle of next year, while Euronews Election News and the South China Morning Post report it will begin around the middle of 2027. Musk did not clarify whether Tesla plans to discontinue the vehicle completely or shift production to another location. [1][2][3][4]

BBC News World, Euronews Election News, Al Jazeera English, and the South China Morning Post all report that Musk attributed the decision to making room for increased production of Tesla's self-driving Cybercab robotaxi. BBC News World noted that lead engineer Wes Morrill posted on X that the Cybertruck lives on through Cybercab. The South China Morning Post reported that US sales of the Cybertruck dropped by 48 per cent last year to 20,237 units, falling far below Musk's initial target of 250,000 vehicles annually. [1][2][3][4]

The Cybertruck was launched in 2023 following multiple delays, according to BBC News World and Al Jazeera English. South China Morning Post reported that the vehicle's heavy, angular design limited its sales to only a few markets. As FTMQ World reported earlier, Tesla recorded third quarter sales of 28.05 billion dollars, down slightly from 28.1 billion dollars in the previous year. [1][3][4][13]

Elon Musk is the chief executive officer and largest shareholder of Tesla. Forbes estimated his net worth at 1.1 trillion dollars as of October 2026. The shift in production underlines a major strategic pivot for Tesla as the company redirects its resources toward autonomous vehicles and robotics. [2][5][8][10]
