A Russian court has sentenced a 68-year-old Russian man to six years in a strict-regime penal colony for publicly justifying terrorism, after he swam across the Nemunas River from Russia's Kaliningrad exclave into neighbouring Lithuania to seek asylum, Euronews and AOL reported on 7 October. Euronews cited Lithuanian media outlet Lrytas for the court ruling. [1][4]
Along with the six-year sentence in a maximum-security penal colony, the court banned the man from administering websites or online channels for three years following his release, according to Euronews. [1]
The Kaliningrad Oblast is an exclave of Russia situated between Lithuania and Poland. Its administrative centre, also named Kaliningrad, is located on the Pregolya River and serves as the only ice-free Russian port on the Baltic Sea. [8]
