Japan summoned the United States envoy on Sunday and lodged a formal protest after a US marine was arrested in connection with the murder of a woman in Okinawa. Al Jazeera English and BBC Asia both reported that the suspect is 20-year-old Lance-Corporal Devin Jacob Ballard, who is accused of robbing and killing 39-year-old Anna Yagi. BBC Asia noted that Ballard is stationed at the US Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, while Al Jazeera English reported that thousands of US servicemen are stationed on the southern island. [1][2]

The victim's body was found in a hotel in Okinawa, according to BBC Asia. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called the crime extremely brutal and heinous on social media, statement details covered by both Al Jazeera English and BBC Asia. Takaichi stated that Japan lodged a strong protest with Washington, urged the US to enforce stricter discipline among its personnel, and requested maximum cooperation with the investigation. [1][2]

United States Ambassador to Japan George Glass pledged full cooperation with the investigation following the diplomatic protest, Al Jazeera English reported. BBC Asia added that US officials stated they are actively cooperating with Japanese authorities in response to the allegations. [1][2]
