Eleven South Australia restaurants receive nation's first Michelin stars

Eleven restaurants in South Australia have received the country's first Michelin stars, the BBC reported on October 14. Magill Estate Restaurant in Adelaide was the only establishment awarded two stars, while ten other venues received one star each. [1]

The awards are confined to South Australia because the state government funded visits by incognito inspectors, according to reporting by national broadcaster ABC cited by the BBC. No restaurants in other Australian states were recognised in this initial selection. [1]

Magill Estate chef and owner Scott Huggins said he had dreamed of working in Michelin star restaurants as a youngster, the BBC reported. The red Michelin Guide rating system was first introduced in 1926 as a single star, with two and three stars added in 1933. [1][8]

The Michelin Guide defines one star as a very good restaurant, while two stars represent excellent cooking that is worth a detour. The guide was originally created in 1900 to assist French drivers in finding local amenities including restaurants and mechanics. [8]
